Sustainable Workspaces is a CAT A and CAT B Refurbishment that will be the home to a full-service ecosystem, empowering sustainable start-ups to scale through community, investment, innovation, and workspace. They currently occupy a small portion of County Hall, a Grade II* listed building, and are relocating to nearly 40,000 sqft on level 5 of the building. A unique challenge for this project is that the new space has been unoccupied and derelict for nearly 40 years.

A major priority and foundational element for this client is the pursuit of sustainability through the reuse and refurbishment of existing materials, engagement with sustainable specialist suppliers and maintaining the ability to deconstruct (and reinstate in the future) as many items that are installed into the space as possible

The members and businesses that are part of Sustainable Ventures produce products and services that are all aimed at Climate Tech—many of which that will be integrated into the project design and align with the community’s sustainable brand and ethos.

Since founding Costa in 1971 at Old Paradise Street, the site will now be transformed into the next generation of commercial office space, pushing the boundaries of ESG and Sustainable Design. Considering embodied carbon and operational energy throughout the design, a Cross Laminated Timber and Glulam structure will be utilised with terracotta façade, seeking to meet and better the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge for embodied carbon and operational energy.

With goals to set the new ‘norm’ for low-carbon office workspace, whilst supporting the health and well-being of its future occupants, standards incorporated including BREEAM ‘Excellent,’ WELL Core ‘Gold, and WIRED ‘Gold’.

In this instance, happiness grows from trees.
